I am so excited!
You may or may not know that I recently had the opportunity to quit my job and become a full-time homemaker. I love to do all (er...most) things domestic--cooking, gardening, home improvement, etc. I love to make from scratch things that most people buy from a store--yogurt, cheese, flour, granola. I would love to have a couple of chickens and a cow to get fresh eggs & milk, but I live in the suburbs and it is not allowed. As you can see, most of the things that I know how to make from scratch are things you do in the kitchen. Alas, I don't know how to sew.
So, I signed up for sewing class. I had my first class yesterday and I am hooked! Our first project was to make this cute little bag.
Officially, it's called a "cosmetic" bag. But, I'm using mine to keep all of my sewing stuff for class (scissors, pins, pin cushion, bobbin, thread). Next week, we'll learn how to make pajama bottoms.
Now, I just need to buy a sewing machine. Anybody out there have experience sewing? Do you have any recommendations for sewing machines? Which features are important and which one's are just fluff? Is a self-threading needle really worth the extra $$$? What about the one's with 1-step button holes? I have been looking at a Husqvarna or a Brother Innovis (don't know the exact model numbers right off hand). I've been told that Singer isn't as great as it used to be. I welcome any and all opinions.
Cheers!

Good for you! I have been sewing for many years. I used to make my daughter's dresses when she was little. Now I make dresses for my grand daughter. I do not have a very fancy machine. I used to have a Singer I bought from a friend for $25. Now I have a Brother I got for about $200 about 8 years ago. Lately, I have been making lined drapes for my new home. I have made bedspreads, pillows and table runners. I do enjoy it and I don't think you need too much fancy stuff on the machine to do a good job. Happy sewing!
Ack - dressmaking - sits up there with the dreaded rectal probe and about as much fun lol. Good for you though getting into it. I admire people who can actually sew.. cos I so CANNOT!
